Word Wall Words

A strong sight vocabulary facilitates fluent and meaningful reading. Each week we add five new words to our word wall. We cheer, chant and clap each one and then practice printing and outlining them. We review new and previous words on following days. These high frequency words will appear in several first grade stories and poems throughout the year. Once a word is placed on the wall, students know they can find the "real" spelling by checking the wall. That's a must during writing! We use these words to help us decode similar words. For example if we know how to spell like, we can spell bike, hike, strike and others. By the end of the school year, there will be over one hundred word wall words that the children should be able to read and spell...just like that!
