100th Day

On February 7, 2008 we celebrated our 100th day of school. For First Graders this was an opportunity to ask...

"Just how much is 100?"

We practiced finding the quickest way of counting to 100, tried to spell 100 words correctly, read books with a 100 theme, hunted for the numbers 1-100 scattered on chocolate kisses around the classroom and worked in small groups to put together six 100 piece puzzles.

We've been in school for 100 days and
we have already learned about/how to:

write sentences print better read use our minds
do math treat others with kindness work hard spell
make "finger" spaces respect others write about a "small moment" in our journals ask if our writing "makes sense"
use capital letters when we need them make snowflakes from coffee filters more vocabulary words than Kindergarten Martin Luther King Jr.
Johnny Appleseed draw pictures with details use periods to finish a sentence count to 100
listen carefully fire safety sound out words work with a partner
follow directions never give up skip and go by a "tricky" word to figure it out find a little word or chunk in a "tricky" word
read in small groups look at the pictures if the word is too hard read chapter books subtract
add metacognition "sweep" back to the left margin when we write recognize the parts in a fairy tale
make connections to books we read use size words say "good morning"
in sign language
recognize pattern units
sorting stuff wait our turn count by two's, five's and ten's good lunch manners

Imagine what we will learn in the next 84 days!

We came to school
And we're so cool!
Hi Ho
   Hi Ho

We worked together on 100 piece puzzles.
We finished them all...great teamwork!

Yes, we really can spell 100 words perfectly!

Once we found all the candies hidden around the classroom and matched their numbers to the 100 poster, we looked for patterns on the chart. We finished by deciding how to distribute the candies so everyone would get a "fair share". That was yummy!
